A Home without Solar is a Home of the Past

Coronado Transitions into a Solar Community Locally owned and operated firm Sullivan Solar Power has been running a comprehensive campaign since the end of May to get as many homes in Coronado to declare energy independence by transitioning to clean, renewable, solar energy. Soon after the campaign began, Sullivan Solar Power announced that it was the company’s vision to use the City as a case study, demonstrating the power of solar photovoltaics by creating a solar community. “Our city is a tight nit, small, condensed community. Coronado is perfectly positioned to make a statement on a national level about its energy independence,” said Dan Sullivan, resident of Coronado and owner of the firm. To make this vision a reality, Sullivan Solar Power began holding monthly catered seminars in the community center for Coronado residents who are interested in learning more about how solar works, the rebates and incentives that are available, and to provide free estimates to those who bring their electric bill. The company also began their own discount incentive program, based upon the number of residents in Coronado who signed up to go solar. The first phase of the program, which ended on September 1, proved to be well embraced by the community. Through the campaign, an additional 76,800 watts are scheduled to be installed in Coronado. These new systems will increase the amount of solar in Coronado by 25 percent. Many of the homeowners who have participated in the initiative so far have stated they did it because it was a responsible investment in today’s market. According to Sullivan, the average residential systems are paying themselves off in six to nine years and homeowners are insulated from rising utility energy costs. Resident Rob Jordan decided to go solar prior to the campaign, when developing his dream home in Coronado. Other residents added solar to increase the property value of their homes. Duffy Lektorich, owner of Mako Construction, installed a solar system because he wanted to give the home he was selling an advantage over other real estate in Coronado. “As residents of Coronado, we’re blessed with sunshine year round so solar was a logical choice,” said Lektorich. With growing popularity of green building in America, it is no wonder that new homes are being developed with solar installations. Thanks to the enthusiasm of its residents, San Diego was recently named number one solar city in the nation for installed watts and number of systems installed. What does this mean? According to Sullivan, the real estate dynamic in Southern California is evolving. “You own your home. Why would you rent your electricity?” To continue enticing the City to go solar, Sullivan Solar Power launched Phase II of the campaign, which began September 2nd and runs until December 1st. In the second phase of the community discount program, resident incentives are as follows: 70kW sold receives 3.75% discount, 100kW receives a 6.25% discount and 150kW receives an 8.75% discount on their installation. The more people who sign up to be a part of the solar community, the greater incentive I am going to provide, so tell your neighbor,” Sullivan said with a smile. Sullivan Solar Power will host its next seminar on October 24th at 1:00PM in the Coronado Community Center.
