This holiday season, Care packages are going around the world from Coronado-based food delivery service Ganosh Gourmet http://www.ganoshgourmet.com. Owner Wendy Sanger McGuire remembers how great it was to receive these packages and that the food from home made all the difference when she got homesick.
In response to the Care Package Drive, Ganosh Gourmet has received hundreds of dollars of goods and cash from Soroptimists International, Coronado Chapter, to augment the packages with gifts specifically for female soldiers. One member emailed ideas of where to buy things in bulk, and another member’s son, Coronadoan Tyler Jordan, responded immediately with a generous donation of gorgeous prints. http://theartoftylerjordan.com. Sue Gillingham from the 1906 Lodge http://www.1906lodge.com donated a huge bag of guest sized toiletries. One friend sent joke items like a whoopee cushion. Excellent!
Wendy and her mother Blossom will pay postage, pack and ship all the packages starting this week. If you wish to donate, food should be sealed or in a tin. Beef jerky and anything homemade is especially prized. Breakable like glass is not recommended. Gift items and toiletries should be new, books and magazines can be gently used. Feel free to include a card. Holiday items will be sent this week, but Care Packages will be mailed throughout the year. They may be mailed to Iraq and Kuwait, but priority is to the soldiers in Afghanistan where conditions are the harshest.
This is MAJ Vasquez from Oceanside, who spent years serving as a Transportation Officer with Wendy McGuire. After his last deployment, he changed branches to Civil Affairs. He is currently in Afghanistan, and says he is enjoying the new field more than he thought he ever would. Due to their remote location, he misses having decent cooked (not just reheated) food.
Thanks for giving. Call 619-823-4701 or email [email protected] to arrange pick up or drop off of your bag of goodies for the soldiers.
