Take a short, cool ride across San Diego Bay, and see the works of over 100 artists from around the country during the annual Coronado Art Walk at the Coronado Ferry Landing on Saturday and Sunday, September 17 and 18. Admission is free. Musical entertainment, hands-on art activities and a free shuttle bus to other Coronado sites will be available both days from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Coronado Art Walk, now in its sixth year, is a major fundraiser for the Coronado Historical Association.
The event brings artists from as far away as Connecticut, Northern California, Arizona and New Mexico who create works in a wide variety of media including jewelry, ceramics, painting and colored pencil, sculpture, photography, glass, body ornament, textiles and wood. Also on display this year will be painted gourds, table art, handmade children’s toys, pine needle basketry, shadowboxes, organic art and “floorcloths.”
Many of the artists have been a part of the event since the very first Coronado Art Walk six years ago. Some familiar faces that will be in attendance again are: Terry Hansen, Jim Nix, Stelios Paraskevas, Cindy Teyro and Nina Vanier.
Among the new artists participating this year are: Alejandro Martinez-Pena, a talented young modern painter; Michael James Slattery, with photography he calls “luminous views.” Tom Grubbé and his sculptural pine needle creations; Jerry Caruso, who makes intriguing glass wall sculptures; Merle Lambeth, a ceramicist of outstanding quality; Jeanette Cook, a well-known bead artist and author; David Salk, with ceramics evocative of the ancient southwest; and Carol Wilson, whose hand-painted silks are one-of-a-kind wearable art.
The Coronado Ferry Landing on San Diego Bay is a picture-perfect setting for the two-day art and music celebration. The Rad Hatter and other hands-on art stations are sure to please all ages. Visitors can try their hand at weaving, painting tiles or creating colorful cards for service persons overseas, while little ones may have their faces painted. Musical entertainment is an important facet of the outdoor event every year, and a variety of popular groups including Breez’n, ALTHEA & CO., the Bayou Brothers and the ever-popular Bill Magee Blues Band will perform on the main stage over the two days.
The Ferry Landing provides a variety of dining opportunities with good choices available on-site for every appetite and budget. Visitors will find ample parking available but for anyone wishing to forgo their cars for the day, San Diego Harbor Excursion will be ferrying pedestrians and bicyclists across the bay. A free shuttle bus will take visitors down Orange Avenue to other shopping and dining spots, the beach or the Hotel Del Coronado for additional sight-seeing.
