1. What is your connection to Coronado? Tell us your Coronado story and how you were first introduced to our city.
My connection to Coronado is two fold and spaced many years apart! I was born and raised in Southern California in another popular tourist beach town Laguna Beach. My father had a sailboat growing up and we used to sail in Mission Bay and off of Coronado in the SD Bay on weekends every now and then. I remember going into the Hotel del Coronado and hanging out at the beach and walking around Orange Avenue shops many times. My funniest memory and scariest was when we ran into one of the pilings of the Coronado Bridge! So much for smooth sailing! I also have many friends and family in San Diego County and have spent many special times here!
2. Why did you choose Coronado to open up your store?
In some odd way Coronado chose me to open my new store! I had been living part time in Coronado since August of 2010 and I would come over to the tennis courts under construction and play late evenings weekday and weekends. I remember telling my best friend who has lived here since she was 16 that I would love to run the pro shop here at the Coronado Tennis Center one day. I had my first tennis shop under the same name in the San Francisco Bay Area from 1998-2002. I opened a second shop in Laguna Beach in 2010. A teaching pro called me up last April and told me that he had heard that the City of Coronado was going out to bid for the new pro shop so I got right on it and prepared a proposal, made a presentation to the selection committee and here I am! We love our location at 1501 Glorietta Bay Blvd.
3. Describe 40-Love Tennis. What services and products will you offer?
Our goal at 40-Love Tennis & Active Wear is to provide the highest quality of service that the local community as well as guests expect in such a special city! We are not your average tennis shop as we offer a large selection of ladies and men’s apparel, tons of accessories, even watches and sunglasses. We offer a great demo program with a large selection of frames ($5.00 for 3 days) and same day stringing on a state of the art constant pull machine. In addition, we operate a large vending machine on property as a convenience with cold drinks and drinks and snacks, energy bars electrolyte replacement in the store. We develop support from the local community by offering on-going 10% discounts for members of the Coronado Tennis Association and for all active and inactive military! Our user friendly website has been a hit especially our Find Partner page where locals and visitors can look for hitting partners based upon level of play and time availability. This service is available at no cost and we can add new tennis players in 24 hours! We work closely with the staff of the Coronado Parks & Recreation Department to make everyones experience here at the center a positive one. The support of the large local resort hotels in Coronado such as the Hotel del Coronado, the Loews and the Marriott have been invaluable as well. We offer a 10% discount to all guests of these hotels as well as residents of The Shores.
4. Share the feedback so far from the community now that you have been open for a few weeks. What are the top sellers?
The feedback on the center and the shop has been extremely positive! I think that most locals as well as visitors recognize that we are all lucky to have such a beautiful public facility for our usage! I cannot tell you how many guests of the Hotel del Coronado are blow away at how beautiful the facility is and what a friendly atmosphere we offer in the shop and around the grounds. Our top selling products have been ladies apparel and men’s and women’s tennis shoes. We also offer a large selection of junior tennis frames and have been very happy with the popularity of our junior products including frames, shoes etc.
5. When you aren’t running the business, how do you enjoy your time away from the shop?
When I am not running the business I love to play tennis obviously! I love tennis for life! I am also an avid bodysurfer, and love to hike and spend time with my large family, roommates and my two dogs! Now that I live in Coronado full-time (as of 9 months ago) I love to see the sights of Coronado and San Diego and enjoy the many great local eateries.
