Student of the Week: Kyana Van Houten
What is your Coronado story?
I was born in Anchorage , Alaska and lived there until I was eight. Before I was born, my parents bought a condo in Imperial Beach , and we would stay there when we came down for vacation during the winter. When I was in third grade, we moved to Aliso Viejo in Orange County and lived there for about two years. Then, we moved down into our condo in Imperial Beach. I went to school there in IB for two years, then transferred into the Coronado school district for 8th grade.
What is your favorite part about Coronado High School?
I don’t think I could ever choose one favorite part. I love all of the CHS staff, the teachers and administrators. They give us so much support, and sincerely care about us as people not just students. I love the amazing opportunities that CHS has provided me with. If I had gone to Mar Vista High School instead of CHS, I never would have helped create a mosaic, built a robot, studied abroad in France , spent a summer doing laser research, or built the amazing relationships that I have now.
What are some of your current passions?
I recently worked on the River of Giving mosaic installation and discovered an art form unlike any other. I love mosaicking and am continuing to create mosaics in my free time.
Where do you want to go to school next year?
My top choices are Stanford, MIT, Princeton , and Harvey Mudd. I want to go into engineering or one of the sciences.
Any favorite spots around Coronado ?
The beach, I love hanging out there with my friends.
What is your favorite memory so far from Coronado High School ?
I’ve had a lot of amazing memories at CHS, but I guess my favorite would be building the robot last year and competing in the San Diego Regional FIRST competition. It was a lot of fun and it was due to robotics that I first became interested in engineering.
Do you have any random fun facts about yourself that you would like to share?
- I need to make sure that everything is really organized, except for when it comes to my room.
- I teach yoga at CHS for students through the Yoga Club and love it.
- My favorite book is The Princess Bride. It’s an amazing parody and novel.
