Shanel Albert is all things flowers in Coronado. She is widely known as The Coronado Flower Lady, a business she purchased with her husband Steve in 2016. And she is also the designer/owner operator for Florabella, which is a full-service floral boutique. The couple has taken over flowers and more, all things growing, above and beyond, in the last four years. From the 2017 reconstruction after the flower stand was destroyed in a high speed crash at Rotary Plaza, to 2018’s Coronado Tree Farm (which was knocked down in a wind and rain storm) and last year’s 2019 Coronado Pumpkin Patch, they do not slow down.
Shanel and Steve have begun construction on a new location for Florabella behind the Brigantine (where Krowntown was). The Florabella shop, with a twist, is a place where customers can pick up flowers and also get little gifts. Shanel has been very mindful of neighboring businesses when envisioning this location. “I thought that, no matter what, I need a studio or shop for Florabella, but in El Cordova I did not want to take away from any of the other businesses.”
The market is sprinkled with beauty service and tourist shops so Shanel is focusing on other items. “On one side I’d like to have bath and body focus: bath bombs, soaps, sugar scrubs, body butter. On the other will be candles, mugs, teas, coffees. There will be no clothes since the area already has shops for that.” Shanel is still working out what the back floral area looks like but customers will be able to order online and pick-up as well as allowing walks-ins to purchase smaller bouquets.
The renovation began a week before the COVID-19 pandemic and that has slowed down the timeline. What was once a hopeful May opening, is now anticipating an opening closer to July. The pandemic has also affected funding and the results of that will make a difference in how soon the new shop can open. This new store will not replace The Flower Lady cart in Rotary Plaza. Next week, Shanel will be on site at the new Florabella store to fulfill orders but it will remain closed to the general public. She is encouraging all interested in Mothers’ Day Bouquets to pre-order through The Flower Lady. Shanel also shares that she’s has taken about $15 off what these orders would traditionally cost.
On The Flower Lady Facebook she shares, “we have put together a beautiful, limited offering, so we can still make those Island Mom’s feel loved on their special day. We will be taking special precautions for your safety by offering contactless delivery as well as enforcing social distancing for pickups and our staff will be wearing masks and gloves.”
