Village Elementary students begin the first Friday of each month on Green Field. The students are assembled to recognize peers who have been selected by their teachers as representatives of the character trait of that month. The students recognized Friday, May 2 are shining examples of the character trait “Caring”. Each child’s name is called and the student walks forward, receives a certificate and then lines up on the first base line of the field. Once all students have been called, they are met with a round of applause from teachers, parents and peers.
The ceremony May 2 was different than most in a couple ways. The last character counts assembly of the year, this program included recognition of students who have participated in school clubs this past year. The advisor for each club explained the club’s purpose and then asked the members to stand for applause. Clubs included Tech Club (where students learn to code on computers), Ambassador Club (students help welcome new children to the school), Running Club (meets twice a week to run or walk on the track), Robotics, Student Council, Peace Pals (conflict resolution through peers), presidential fitness awards and more.
These students were recognized for participation in running club. Running club is for 4th and 5th graders and meets twice weekly.
Principal Whitney DeSantis and Vice-Principal Tom Bevilacqua took the time to recognize Jesse Sanchez. Mr. Sanchez retired Thursday, May 1 after serving the students, staff and families of Coronado Unified School District for 20 years. In his time with CUSD, Mr. Sanchez has served at every school in the district. He is friendly, helpful and will certainly be missed by many. Mr. Sanchez could always be counted on to have a smile on his face and a genuine desire to help in any way necessary with the task at hand. He indicated that he “is excited” for retirement and that he chose to retire because “it’s time!”
Village Elementary Principal, Whitney DeSantis, talks about newly retired, long time custodian, Jesse Sanchez.
Mr. Sanchez was presented with cards, letters and posters from the children at Village Elementary.
