Each week, the City of Coronado City Manager’s Office provides an update that includes information on programs, services and issues within the City, as well as news, project updates and follow-up information when applicable. Burglary Arrest
Coronado Police Department investigators have determined through physical evidence that the three juveniles arrested Tuesday, December 9, are most likely responsible for the two burglaries and one attempted burglary that occurred in October in the same neighborhood where they were arrested. The juveniles, from San Diego, traveled on public transportation after school to commit the crimes. Some of the property stolen in the burglaries has been recovered. Detectives have been contacting the victims to identify the recovered property so it can be returned to the rightful owners. The Police Department would like to thank the residents in the northwest part of the City for their commitment and continued diligence in helping to solve these crimes.
Cays Sewer Main Inspection and Air Release Valves Replacement
The contractor finished installation of the new air release valves and pipe de-watering appurtenances along the Bayshore Bikeway this past Monday night, December 8, and has begun construction of the vault structure at the main’s low point. Construction warning signs and lighted barricades are in place to warn users of the construction site adjacent to the bike path. Bicyclists and pedestrians are reminded to use caution when passing through the area.
Design Review Commission
On Wednesday, December 10, the Design Review Commission continued the public hearing for the exterior design of a new six-unit residential condominium development at 841-855 F Ave. The hearing was continued to the next regular meeting of the Commission on January 14, 2015. The Commission approved the following:
– A new front and side-yard fence for the existing residential condominium development at 925 Tenth St.
– The conversion of four open tandem parking spaces to an enclosed garage at 905 and 911 Olive Ave.
– A new accessible entry ramp for the Hotel del Coronado, adjacent to the main building’s front entry door at 1500 Orange Ave.
Tip Jar Thefts
If you own a business in town or know someone who does, Coronado Police are warning of a spate of tip jar thefts in town. Three businesses in the 900 block of Orange Avenue had their tip jars stolen Friday afternoon between 1:15 and 1:45 p.m. The suspect is described as a white male adult, approximately 40 years old, and was last seen wearing a blue polo shirt with an open collar and khaki pants. The suspect was seen placing the money in a black backpack with pink trim. Please call the police department if you see the subject in the area (619) 522-7350.
Free Downtown Parking
Police Officers “bagged” the parking meters in the business district of the City this week. The annual gift, provided by the City of Coronado, allows motorists two hours of free parking in hopes of encouraging holiday shopping locally. The event runs through Saturday, December 27. Don’t forget, the two-hour parking limit still applies and the Police Department will still enforce the regulation.
Prevent Delivery Package Theft
This time of year brings out people looking for crimes of opportunity, as well as those thieves who actually follow delivery trucks and target homes where deliveries are made. If you plan to do any online shopping or are expecting personal packages, there are a few things you can do to reduce your chances of being victimized by thieves:
Have the package delivered to your workplace, if it is allowed, or to a trusted neighbor or friend who is more likely to be home.
Choose a shipping option that requires you to sign for delivery or track the delivery status online so you can try to be home when the package arrives. Some retailers or shipping companies even offer text messages to your cellphone to alert you when items have been delivered.
Ask the shipping company to hold your package for customer pick-up at its local facility.
If you do not receive your shipment on time, track your package to confirm the delivery.
If the item was delivered and you did not receive it, report the theft or loss to the originating company, the shipping company and to the Coronado Police Department.
As always, watch for suspicious behavior in your neighborhood, especially if you see a delivery truck making the rounds and a vehicle following behind or unfamiliar people on foot. Call 911 if you observe a crime in progress.
