City Manager’s Weekly Update – April 5, 2019

  • The city has received an influx of applications from wireless companies to construct new cell site facilities in Coronado, dozens of new facilities will be needed to meet 5G technology
  • City hosted and open house on utility undergrounding on April 4, another will be scheduled
  • Off-leash dog park public workshops April 8 and April 11
  • Recreation & Golf Services introduced new registration software and new accounts must be created

Wireless Facilities Notifications: Over the past year, the City has received an influx of applications from wireless communication companies to construct and operate new cell site facilities in Coronado. Wireless communication providers have also indicated that they will require dozens of new facilities over the next several years to meet expected demand for new 5G technology. In response, the City Council recently adopted an ordinance to ensure that any new facilities are appropriately sited and designed to minimize visual and community character impacts. The new ordinance requires residents within 300 feet of a proposed facility to be notified in advance of a permit being issued to provide an opportunity for residents to request a public hearing before a permit is issued. Under existing federal law, cities are limited in preventing these new facilities. They cannot prevent wireless carriers from constructing and operating them, nor are they allowed to consider potential health effects. These restrictions are frustrating for elected officials, staff and residents alike. The City will continue to exercise its limited authority wherever possible. Residents are encouraged to share their concerns directly with wireless carriers.

Sidewalk Preservation: The Public Services team takes great pride in maintaining the City’s sidewalks to the highest quality and safety standards in the region. Within the past three years, every public right of way sidewalk in the City has been evaluated, rated and scheduled, where necessary, for maintenance and repairs. Preserving the City’s historic character is an important part of the City’s strategy. When sidewalks need to be repaired or replaced, which most commonly occurs when there are upheavals or cracking due to tree root system growth and intrusion, Public Services replaces the section of sidewalk to match the sidewalk design that was removed. Undergrounding Open House: On Thursday, April 4, the City hosted an open-house forum to present information and seek community input on the City’s Utility Undergrounding program. City staff and the City’s consultant, Harris & Associates, made a presentation and answered questions. The City is looking for input from residents about options that could maximize or stretch the General Fund resources set aside for placing utilities underground. A second meeting is being planned.

New Recreation Registration Program: The Recreation and Golf Services Department introduced community members this week to PerfectMind, Recreation’s new registration software. All Recreation Department patrons are required to create a new account in PerfectMind by completing the New Account Request form. Coronado residents also will need to provide current proof of Coronado residency or current proof of age for minor children, if applicable.
