Many Coronado residents have taken notice that an increasing number of Coronado High School students fail to protect themselves by not wearing a helmet. eCoronado.com did a short “video poll” to find out what CHS students think about wearing a helmet as well as conduct a general survey of bikes in the bike rack that had helmets hanging on them.

Not only can students protect their heads by wearing a helmet, they can also protect their wallets. California law requires anyone under the age of 18 to wear a helmet. Helmet tickets start at $25, but can reach up to $300 according to the amount of violations. In a bike-riding community like Coronado, it is critical to wear a helmet.
Lea Corbin from the Coronado Police Department comments on the importance of wearing a bike helmet: “Other than it being the law, the purpose of wearing bicycle helmets, especially for children, is to reduce the number of severe and fatal head injuries involved in bicycle crashes. Bicycle helmets, when used properly, reduce head injuries and fatalities.” If Coronado residents wish to keep this town a safe and friendly environment for bikers, helmet usage must be widely encouraged among all ages.
