In case you missed it, the City Manager provided a Q&A for water conservation in Coronado. Below are the highlights including what the Governor’s executive actions means for us, steps Coronado has or is considering to reduce water consumption, and how to report water waste.
Q. What does the Governor’s executive order mean to Coronado?
A. On April 1, Gov. Jerry Brown issued mandatory statewide water restrictions, including a mandatory 25 percent water usage reduction. Two state agencies will in May and interpret the Governor’s action and will provide to municipal water districts. The resulting restrictions will not be implemented overnight. The City will monitor the situation and see what results from measures being proposed by the Governor and considered by the State Water Resource Control Board and the Public Utilities Commission. Coronado understands the spirit of the Governor’s action and has taken steps to conserve water now and in the long term.
Q. What has the City done to conserve water?
A. The City has been proactive in its efforts at reducing water consumption. Recently the city updated the Golf Course’s Irrigation Control System to water the grass more efficiently and is currently evaluating reducing the amount of grass on the golf course by approximately 30%. The City has been and continues to study building a reclaimed water plant to recycle water and use it for irrigation. Also, the council recently voted to waive the permit fee for installing artifical turf –this was championed by former Councilmember Al Ovrum.
Q. Who should residents call if they want to report water waste?
A. If on public property, please call Public Services (619) 522-7380.
