- Charles “Chuck” Kaye has been selected as Coronado’s new Police Chief and will begin later in October
- Chinese Flame tree in 1000 block of Isabella Avenue was destroyed using an ax by vandals and will not survive

- Tree Vandalized: Coronado Police are investigating an incident that happened late Saturday, September 29, involving a mature tree in the public right of way that was destroyed using an ax. It appears that the vandal or vandals wanted to chop down the tree in the 1000 block of Isabella Avenue but failed. The Chinese Flame tree is not currently in danger of falling, however, it likely will not survive the damage, which included large gashes and sections of bark chopped off. It will be removed. The value of the mature tree is estimated at more than $10,000. Officers are taking a report and looking for video evidence of the incident. Anyone with any information is asked to call the Coronado Police non-emergency line at (619) 522-7350.
- Golf Course Clubhouse: Although there is an extensive remodel of the Golf Course Clubhouse planned in early 2019, the new Clubhouse concessionaire is open for business, serving food all day. Some in the community may not know that full service has resumed due to a closure in August of the restaurant from unexpected repairs in the kitchen from a water leak in the wall. That has been repaired and Feast and Fareway is fully operational.
- Pink Public Safety Badges: In October, the men and women of the Coronado Police and Fire departments will join more than 170 law enforcement and fire agencies around the country in the Pink Patch Project. - Tap Water Issue: The City has heard from residents that the water from their taps tastes different. California American Water sent this notice on Thursday, October 4:
“Customers in the Coronado District service area may be experiencing an earthy/musty taste or odor issues with their drinking water. Neither issue poses a health concern. Changes in water source used by our purchased water supplier, the City of San Diego, is the cause of this issue. The City of San Diego has removed this source to correct this. Please be assured that we are continuously monitoring your drinking water supply to ensure we meet EPA water quality guidelines. The source adjustments made by the City of San Diego could take two to three days to take full effect and resolve these issues. We appreciate your patience as we work to correct this.”
- New Streamlined Business Certificate Process: Beginning January 1, the City will initiate a new streamlined business certificate registration program to replace the former business license tax. All those conducting business in Coronado will be required to register their business with the city and pay a $26 annual fee. Affected businesses include home-based occupations, solicitors, contractors, professions and trades. Nonprofit organizations must obtain a certificate but do not have to pay the fee. Those who conduct business in Coronado but are located outside city limits must also obtain a business certificate. Businesses will be notified to renew annually. A business certificate may be obtained online or by visiting City Hall at 1825 Strand Way.
- Beach Accessibility Mats:
The Council agreed this week to purchase and install beach accessibility mats at Central, North Beach and Dog Beach. The Council tasked the Parks and Recreation Commission to evaluate beach accessibility mats, which will make traversing even the city’s widest beaches easier for those with mobility issues. The Commission heartily endorsed the mats as a way to provide access to all. Look for the mats as early as spring 2019. - Parks is overseeing the City’s annual palm-pruning program. The City’s contractor will begin pruning palms in parkways and parks throughout Coronado in two weeks. Palm fruiting and hanging fronds are a common concern for residents. Both can occur simultaneously throughout town so the City must be diligent and coordinated in its work to remove both fruit and fronds. The contractor will begin work in the Cays and work will towards the east side of Orange Avenue. From there, the contractor will start work on the west side Orange and expects to finish palm pruning by the end of December. No parking signs may appear on short notice when the contractor has been able to get ahead of schedule.
