Three local Girl Scout Cadettes from Troop 5148 wanted to pursue the Girl Scout Silver Award, the 2nd highest award in Girl Scouts and the highest a Cadette can earn, and make positive changes in their community. The Silver Award requires a total of 50 or more hours of volunteer time per participant.
Hannah Parrett, Maggie Stall and Emily Mowry (all rising freshmen) formed a team, found an issue that concerned them, and made a plan. Their Silver Award project was to find an alternative to plastic bags which injure sea animals, foul our beaches, and add plastic to the ever growing Pacific Gyre. Their solution was to create reusable bags out of tank tops. The girls rounded up tank tops from a variety of thrift shops and from their own closets. They learned how to sew them closed, and then they decorated those that were plain. Approximately 60 ‘tank top reusable bags’ were created and labeled before being distributed into the community through a booth at the Flower Show and by the girls giving them away.
All three girls are now poised to go for the Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouts, earned by Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts, and comparable to the Boy Scout Eagle Award.
