27th Annual Teddy Bear DriveCity of Coronado Police Department is partnering with the Coronado Chamber of Commerce on the 27th annual San Diego Law Enforcement Teddy Bear Drive. This is now a countywide effort but it began in Coronado in 1990. New stuffed animals are being collected for delivery on December 5 to Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego. Collection bins can be found in City facilities, and with the help of the Chamber, in local businesses as well. The effort was founded in 1990 by now-retired Coronado Police Officer Brian Hardy who wanted to do something for kids at Rady Children’s over the holidays. It has grown to include more than just stuffed animals. In September, organizers realized an idea to transport kids from pre-op to surgery in fun, electric vehicles instead of gurneys, and last year, gaming carts equipped with electronic gaming consoles were added. Other efforts include Night-Night carts with lip balm, ear plugs, coffee and tea for the families, some books to read and coloring books for the kids, and bereavement memory boxes and weighted bears, similar in weight to that of a child, to assist in the grieving process. Active Transportation Master Plan Meeting:  The City of Coronado held a Stakeholder Advisory Committee meeting on Tuesday, November 14, for its continued efforts to help develop an Active Transportation Master Plan. The committee is nearing the end of its work and is creating an online questionnaire and materials for public review. A third public workshop is planned for January of 2018. A date will be announced. Caltrans Bridge Meeting: The California Department of Transportation, the agency in charge of managing and maintaining the San Diego-Coronado Bridge, held one of two open house meetings in Coronado this week to provide an update on the feasibility study on potential suicide deterrents on the bridge and to take public comment. Coronado’s meeting was held Tuesday, November 15, at the Community Center. The second meeting was held the next evening in Barrio Logan. Caltrans officials had representatives available to discuss deterrents used on other bridges and to hear concerns. Caltrans is seeking input from a variety of citizens on both sides of the bridge, including the City of San Diego, San Diego Fire and U.S. Coast Guard.
