Coronado Boys Varsity Basketball team is rewriting the record books with a win-loss record of 24-2. They are currently on a 10 game win streak heading into the final stretch of the Central League season. On Thursday, the Crawford Colts came to town hoping to slow the Islanders down. Crawford (7-12) had their hands full from the beginning. After winning the opening tip, Coronado’s Dejon (DJ) Jackson got the ball down low, drew a foul and scored. Sophomore Bruen Roulier scored next on a breakaway layup, followed by a sweet pull up jumper by Myles Manning. Coronado employed a full court press which paid off with several early turnovers by the overmatched Crawford guards. Roulier’s deft lob pass inside to Jackson scored an easy two. DJ posted up for two more followed by a fast break, pull up jumper by Manning and a breakaway layup by Vaughn Madariaga. Roulier, showing poise with the ball, found DJ again inside for two. That fast paced scoring swelled the score to 18-4 within a span of two minutes. A steal by Scott Hendricks who was fouled and converted both free throws capped the first quarter with the score: Islanders 20 – Crawford 11.
It was more of the same in the 2nd quarter. Roulier gathered a long rebound and went coast to coast for two. Caden Gentry scored with a strong move to the basket. DJ continued dominating the boards. Roulier flashed another steal and lay-up. Manning, who led all scorers with 16 points, hit a nice jumper from the right side. Near the end of the half, sophomore Nathan Dorow made an acrobatic move inside against two defenders for his first points of the night. The Islanders were firmly in charge at halftime with the score 38-13.
The Islanders eased off the press, but not the scoring, in the second half. Roulier found Madariaga inside for an easy bucket. Soon after, the combination Roulier to Jackson, (#5 to DJ, all Day) scored again. During one stretch, Myles Manning scored 9 straight points on a put back bucket, a 15 foot jumper, a long 3 from out front and two free throws after driving baseline to the glass, drawing a foul.
Wyatt Montague got on the score board with a nice assist from Nathan Dorow. Scott Hendricks followed with a strong rebound and put back to close the 3rd period, 57-21 Islanders.
Josef Perez checked into the game and handled the ball nicely. #35 Sullivan Alexander scored inside and also had a blocked shot. David Grant-Williams was clobbered underneath and converted 1 of 2 free throws, and Eric Seifert made a couple free throws late to round out the Islander scoring.
