CORONADO, CA (August 23, 2016) – The ongoing Glorietta Bay Pump Station project led to a series of events Tuesday, August 23, that resulted in the failure of a temporary sewer bypass pump. The failure caused an estimated 3,500 gallons of untreated sewage to spill into and close sections of Glorietta Bay.
The City was notified of the overflow at about noon on Tuesday. City personnel working with the contractor were able to stop the spill within an hour of notification by activating a standby, bypass pump that was positioned at the pump station construction site.
The bypass failure resulted in sanitary sewer overflow from five manholes; two in the vicinity of the Glorietta Bay Boat Launch Ramp and one at the northern end of the Glorietta Bay Marina. All surface area spill locations were cleaned and disinfected. Crews used wet vacuums and the City’s two Vactor trucks to capture the spill material.
The spill was reported to the appropriate local agencies, including San Diego County health officials who will take samples over the next 24-48 hours to test if the water is safe. Glorietta Bay is closed to swimming and water sports (see map below).
