We, the Coronado Scribes, consist of both professional and amateur writers. We have in common a desire to learn, by sharing our efforts and listening to other writers. We hold pressure-less sessions every Wednesday, at the Coronado Library conference room, starting at 1:30. Often we have guests who wish to just listen. They are welcome, and so are you. Each week on eCoronado, we feature a different piece of prose or poetry produced by one of our writers. Please feel free to comment or ask
Social Classes by the Sea
By Mike Lavin
Here I fritter at Ocean’s edge
Frantic and frenzied
Shrieking and squawking at the skies with envy
Watching brown pelicans plunge straight away,
Devouring fish in such a noble way.
Oh how great it would be
To fish just in the sea
No, I have to beg and bother
Screeching at kids to throw Fritos at me
Or at grannies to share their bread after tea.
Splash, another California brown
I feel second rate to that bird
Whose wings fan downward into a V
Dropping vertical straight into the sea
Oh how jealous I can be
I am not asking to be Osprey or Pacific loon
Much too regal for my cranky plume
No, I just want to start over again
And wake up as a Pelican.
We know that cannot occur
The bird’s Almighty Genome, such a Saboteur
So here, I peck exasperated
Sand’s welcome mat
Like Icarus, trite with failed ambition
But when all is said and done,
At least I am not a pigeon
