SAVE the “E” Avenue Eucalyptus Trees – Join Us on Sept. 10th

The City of Coronado has decided to cut down several historic Sugar Gum Eucalyptus trees lining the 100 block of
“E” Avenue in Coronado. These majestic natural monuments have been a fixture in Coronado for over 80 years
and have grown hundreds of feet tall. The beautiful environment that the trees create for residents, visitors and
wildlife is in danger!

The City deems several of the 18 trees “high risk” and will resort to removing them completely. It is the opinion of
concerned residents that the trees may be saved, and heavy pruning and other methods can be used to save
them. The City sent letters to the residents of the block dated Friday, 9/5/2014, and will be onsite with a Certified
Arborist on Wednesday, 9/10/2014 from 4:00pm to 5:00pm. This allows only 4 days to mobilize and inform the
community.

Tom and Kirby Watson, residents of the block, have lived under the trees for 45 years and have enjoyed the
magnificence of these Eucalyptuses. They are devastated by the city’s decision, and say that the trees are a
fixture of the community and that’s why they bought their home there. They have concerns about property
values as well.

The trees are ‘self pruners’ and will drop branches naturally. The Watsons have never witnessed any damage or
injury caused by dropping limbs in 45 years. Along with neighbors, they feel that diligent maintenance by the City
can save these landmarks and eliminate any hazard. In 2013, a large tree limb broke and fell onto a crowd at a
concert in Coronado’s Spreckels park, severely injuring a man. That tree was not removed.

The canopy that the trees create over the 100 block of “E” avenue has also become home and nesting places for
many species of birds, including the Blue Heron and Peregrine Falcon.

News outlets and the public are urged to review the below letter from the City, and join us onsite
for coverage and Q & A.
