CSF Summer Enrichment Classes are Back with a New and Improved Look

Start the summer right with enjoyable and informative classes for your K-12 students!

ENROLL NOW IN CSF SUMMER ENRICHMENT COURSES.

The Coronado Schools Foundation is once again offering summer enrichment courses for children who will be entering Kindergarten through 12th grade in the fall. The foundation modified the program this year to include three, one-week sessions instead of one three-week session. This development offers increased opportunities for involvement with flexibility for participants. Students can enroll for one week, two weeks or all three. Each week will offer unique content for maximum engagement and fun! Classes start June 16 and run through July 3, 2014.

There are a wide variety of classes offered and complete information can be found here.

Village Elementary fourth grade teacher, Kathy Shady, will be returning as the summer enrichment principal. The foundation is honored and thankful for the sponsorship of Boney’s Bayside Market, FOCUS (Friends of Children United Society), Coronado Rotary Club and Mullins Orthodontics.

Courses are taught by credentialed teachers within the Coronado Unified School District (CUSD). SAT Test Prep is taught by Steve Reiss, an extremely qualified instructor with his own company. Classes will take place at Coronado Middle School (CMS), 550 F Avenue, except the three week Musical Theatre and Drama, which will be held at the Coronado High School Performing Arts Center.

For ease and convenience, CSF partners with the Coronado Recreation Department. Children who enroll in CSF enrichment classes are invited to attend Camp Coronado (separate fee applies) from noon to 6 p.m. At the conclusion of morning CSF classes, children enrolled in Camp Coronado will be accompanied by Recreation Department Staff from the school to the Camp Coronado site. Katie, who took the leadership course last summer and spent each day assisting a teacher with the cooking class says, “I worked with elementary school children from 8 a.m. to noon. The first two hours were younger kids and the last two hours were older children. The recipes were more complex for the later group. It was a really great experience and one day we even made lunch for all the summer enrichment participants. The leadership portion was valuable and even though I committed four hours a day, five days a week to this program (at the very beginning of summer), I am going to do it again!!”

There is a little something for everyone, from music to science to art to cooking.

TechFUNology! Taught by Jodi Judd

While it may sound difficult, did you know that children as young as 6 years old can begin coding (computer programming)? And have FUN while doing it!
Children in today’s world are surrounded by technology and are intuitive users of it. Now is the time for them to take that technology and use it to create. Through these week long classes offered through CSF’s summer enrichment program, your child will learn to program (code) “sprites” to perform various tasks. They will also see what augmented reality (AR) is all about and how to create their very own auras. To see first hand just how exciting this new technology is, take a look at the 1:30 min. video below of 2nd graders at Silver Strand as they see their colorings come to life.

Eat Right to Play Hard/ Stay Healthy Kids taught by Kathy Cotton

My name is Kathy Cotten and I began my teaching career at the Naval Academy Primary School in Annapolis, MD teaching kindergarten. After moving to Coronado I held a variety of long term substitute positions at Village Elementary and the middle school. Currently I teach 7th grade humanities.
We have so many students who are involved in sports and other activities in our community, so my summer enrichment class, Eat Right to Play Hard, will focus on the need to fuel our bodies for these activities. We will learn about “power foods,” and the important role they play in keeping us active. Students will learn how to read food labels, analyze menus, and plan meals that provide them with the nutrition they need to keep their active bodies moving!
Students will participate in a number of physical activities that will test the theories they have discovered about the “power foods”.

I look forward to working with your children this summer.

Creative Writing, Oh My Blog taught by Breanne Lagomarsino
