My wife, Sherril, and I completed the 5 week classroom and hands-on training to become Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) members this morning. The classes are free and are offered at the Coronado Police Station EOC facility. Our instructors were Coronado EMT’s and Fire Personnel. If there is an emergency such as the recent power outage, look for us in our green helmets and vests. We’re here to help!

| Brief Description: | There are monthly Continuing Education meetings (third Thursdays) attended by about 30 of the most active volunteers. The group is lead by an Executive Board of volunteers who also meet monthly, operating with Bylaws. They receive direction from the Emergency Preparedness Coordinator who is a Fire Division Chief. There is a strong affiliation with the Coronado Emergency Radio Operators (ham radio) with several volunteers having joint membership. |

A little bit about CERT:
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.
