Navy Leapfrogs to Kick off Tribute to Fallen Navy SEALS at 9/11 Event in Coronado

The tenth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks will be front and center at the opening ceremonies of the country’s oldest and longest running triathlon, SUPERFROG XXXIII presented by “Act of Valor”, in Coronado on Sunday, September 11th. The event will pay tribute to 71 Navy SEALS and Naval Special Warfare personnel who gave their lives in combat and training in support of the global war on terrorism.

SUPERFROG XXXIII will be held on the training beaches of past and current Navy SEALS at Naval Special Warfare/Advanced Training Command, 1 Hooper Boulevard. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Navy SEAL Foundation.

The Navy Leapfrog skydiving team will drop into the race venue at 6:30 a.m. A piece of one of the fallen World Trade Center buildings will be on display and the pre-race ceremonies will include a moment of silence along with a performance by the Navy Band Southwest. Banners, with photographs and biographies of the fallen SEAL members, will be prominently displayed.

“We really want to create an atmosphere of patriotism at this year’s event while paying tribute to our fallen brothers,” said Race Director Mitchell Hall, a SEAL team member for 21 years. Hall added, “The high level of patriotism we experienced in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks has faded, and it would be nice, at least for this important day in our country’s history, to feel that way again.” Hall was awarded a Silver Star and Bronze Star. He retired from military service in June, 2011.

SUPERFROG Triathlon has its roots as a training event to prepare SEALS for the Ironman Triathlon
in Hawaii. The competition consists of 1.2 miles open ocean swim, a 56 mile bike course and a 13.1 mile run.
