If the commission really wanted to study traffic congestion on the island they would have included the gridlock that is Orange Ave during the summer months and weekends as well as traffic to the base . Does the current commission include that in the report? If so, then I apologize (but I doubt it) because its called “The Coronado Tunnel Commission” and not the “Coronado Traffic Congestion Study”. Its purpose is to study putting a tunnel from the bridge to the base – Period. And while they say that only 6 out of 9 suggestions are for tunnel alternatives, that’s 2/3 or 66%. The vote was nearly 70% to dump the idea. If you can’t figure it out in ten years then you can’t figure it out. This ten year cash-cow for the consultants needs to be over.
If the council REALLY wants to look at traffic congestion solutions (real, workable, doable, implementable) then dissolve the commission and institute a real study with members/consultants who don’t have a stake in the outcome. Transparency is key and I would question why they would do anything else given Tuesday’s results. The voters have spoken and the council needs to respond appropriately. Otherwise, November will bring about new members who do take voters seriously. Most voters are fed up with arrogant representatives that think they know better.
