Orange & Park: February Surf

On February 14th, our city-slicking friends in Manhattan spent Valentine’s Day burrowing their way out of a storm that draped a ten-inch thick blanket of snow over a large part of the city.

Here in Coronado, it was 73 degrees. There was not a cloud in the sky, and a winter swell was delivering head-high sets at North Beach—solid surf for this beach at this time of year.

North is known to have great waves in the summer, when southwest swells are generated from hurricanes in Mexico, and western swells from South Pacific storms wrap around Point Loma. However, in the winter, North Beach is usually relatively calm.

We took these photos between 10:00 and 11:00 AM. It was, even by Coronado’s extraordinarily high standards, a perfect day. Pictured surfers include longtime Coronado residents Kai Tanaka, Ian Bernard and Pete Cuffaro.

ABOUT ORANGE AND PARK

Orange and Park Coronado Neighborhoods Print
Orange & Park is a site created by Coronado locals with Coronado-related art prints, jewelry, stickers and a blog.

The Coronado Neighborhoods screen-print breaks the whole island into different boroughs. We exercised artistic freedom to plot the sections of Coronado that lacked established names and borders. From time to time we post stories about selected areas like the one above.
