The tunnel issue is not a 3rd or 4th street issue – it is a Coronado issue!

The tunnel issue is not a 3rd or 4th street issue – it is a Coronado issue. When we have our main arteries clogged and bottlenecked due to a huge requirement of traffic flow from one area of the island, it affects all of us insidiously in so many ways. The speed alone of vehicles that rev up their cars on the highway 75 (on their way to work) is so deadly for pedestrians and bikes, etc; people who are in traffic only have urgency on their minds and loose their sense of awareness for other vehicles, pedestrians, signs and signal lights. Then think about how this traffic backs up on Orange, it eventually will get to the point where it will push the cars onto untraveled streets and these cars will sit on these streets waiting to get through — blocking your streets in front of homes and alleys that we use to get onto to do our errands and important appointments. The traffic affects us all, and will only continue to get worse; and quick fixes by band aiding it in one area of the artery (might be less expensive) may only address a very shallow level of problems and our needs as a City to address traffic issues now and well into the future. If you truly and deeply look at Coronado as a whole, the traffic separates us as a community: it makes our lives miserable when we are stuck in it to get to our grocery stores, dry cleaning, pharmacies, hospital and the list goes on. Most of the traffic on our main arteries are not invested in Coronado – they want to get in and then out and quick fixes are best for them. But for those who truly are emotionally and pridefully invested in Coronado, we need a bigger solution than band-aiding. Band-aiding methods are quick, superficial, less expensive and might get temporary results, but not for the long-term solution that we need for our City.

There are other factors of our beautiful City that will be affected negatively and already has, but it will take longer to discuss here. The gist of it is that it is important for all our citizens to not just look at it from our narrow perspective – we need to look beyond our own. We have to look at it from the City’s well being as a whole because while you think you are safe and not affected by the traffic on the bridge right now, it will inevitably catch up to those who are further out from the main arteries. You may not see the deeper affects now, but maybe later it will become clearer when we pass the life of living in Coronado onto our own children and other loved ones. We have been having such beautiful weather the last two days – reminds us to be thankful and to appreciate our City as a whole! Have a wonderful and safe day, everyone!
