A Happy 4th- well….mostly

This 4th of July was our first in the most beautiful city on the planet. We moved here shortly after a year in Iraq and heard about the wonderful 4th of July celebrations almost from day one. Our 4th lived up to everything we could’ve hoped. So what do we mean by Happy 4th- mostly? The week before the 4th, we purchased 12 medium sized American flags and a handful of very small ones to decorate our yard- we lined our walkway and flower beds with the flags and it looked great. Well…after walking around the island to see the decorations and arts in the park on Saturday morning, the 4th itself, we returned to our home on C Ave to find one of the larger flags and a couple of the smaller ones gone. Unable to believe someone would abscond with an American flag, we thought and thought about how many we’d bought or where it could have gone. Our only conclusion was someone decided they wanted it more than we did. Perhaps we are just naive or don’t “get” it but when did it become o.k. to take something that doesn’t belong to you, from someone’s yard, just because it isn’t tied down? And of all things, an American flag! I’m not sure the Constitution promises life, liberty, and the theft of the flag. With the number of flags around the city on the 4th, I doubt we are the only family to have this happen to us. Hopefully whoever took our flags (it actually happened twice) will one day look themselves in the mirror and feel the shame they should. To end on a positive note, thank you Coronado for a great 4th and a warm welcome to the community.
