- Tsunami Awareness Week: March 26-30 is Tsunami Awareness Week. On Wednesday, March 28, at approximately 10:15 a.m., the National Weather Service conducted a test of the Emergency Alert System. The message was issued as a routine monthly test in the Pacific and coastal areas of central and southern California. The test was also broadcast on NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards, local television and radio stations. The graphics below, from The Tsunami Zone and the City’s Tsunami Preparedness Guide, offer information and tips on what to do and how to protect yourself during earthquakes and tsunami warnings. Another online resource is the California Office of Emergency Services.
- South Beach Restrooms: The City’s Portable Restroom Trailer (PRT) at South Beach is currently out service and relocated to the Public Services yard for repairs and maintenance. The PRT will be returned to its location at South Beach after City staff is confident that all of its repairs have been made and its ready for the long, upcoming summer season. In the meantime, portable toilets and a hand washing station will be in-place until the PRT returns.
- Dockless Bicycles: In December, Dockless Bicycle companies requested permission to operate a commercial business from public property and public streets in Coronado. The City Council did not approve their request for a Coronado Commercial Use Permit. Over the past several weeks, there has been an increase in the number of dockless bicycles left in Coronado. As part of normal patrol, the Police Department has been tasked with posting the bicycles left on public property or right-of-way. Bikes that remain unclaimed are picked up the next day by the Public Services Department. They are stored until they are retrieved by the owners. The number of dockless bike left in Coronado has dramatically decreased over the past week dropping from over two dozen bikes a day to fewer than six per day. Special acknowledgement is given to OFO bike that has made an effort to pick-up bikes daily and who recently paid the costs associated with collecting their bikes. It should be noted that Coronado is home to eleven Bicycle rental companies and is designated a silver-level bicycle friendly community by the League of American Bicyclists.
