Last Saturday, the cross country season concluded in Fresno, CA at the state meet. Coronado’s cross country team had previously placed 2nd (for girls) and 3rd (for boys) in the CIF Division-IV Finals at Morley Field. They were then able to advance to the Division-IV state meet where they ran against the top schools in California.
In the official standings, the girls’ team took eighth place out of over twenty teams competing. Teresa Perez was the top runner from Coronado and placed 32nd of nearly two hundred runners, clocking 19:22 (Mile Pace: 6:13). Madden Hundley then followed with a time of 20:02 (Mile Pace: 6:26). Other finishers were Sofia Van Arsdale, Jessica Ehret, Naya Tamariz, Abigail Hundley, and Natalya Gomez. The girls’ team will be losing seniors Tamariz and Gomez next year. However, freshmen Van Arsdale, Ehret, and Abigail Hundley will be returning next year as a great asset to the team. “Without this trio, we may not have advanced to State,” says Coach Green. Junior Claire Morris will be coming back next year after an injury this season.
The boys’ team placed thirteenth in their Division-IV race. Ian Hurlburt, with a time of 16:51 (Mile Pace: 5:25) was followed by Spencer Busby, who clocked 16:56 (Mile Pace: 5:27). Patrick Harris, Luke Klingenberg, Cole Mullins, Cole Nichols, and Casey Harris then followed Busby in the state meet. Runners who are graduating include Patrick Harris, Hurlburt, Nichols, and injured runner Danny Mineo. Kevin May and Connor Jaynes from the injured list will return next year to make a strong team, along with the other varsity runners.
“Out of the combined results for the San Diego Section at the state meet the girls placed 9th and the boys placed 11th,” says Coach Green. Congratulations to the cross country team and Coach Green for an outstanding season.
