The County of San Diego, the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) and domusstudio architecture commissioned a study for the feasibility of the construction of a tube for bikes and pedestrians to travel across the Coronado Bridge. That study, by HNTB Corporation, was released this week and the full report can be viewed here.
Three location options were presented for the tube (as can be seen in the image above) along with benefits and challenges for each. The lofty rough-cost estimate is around $200 million.
The study also addresses entry and exit points, safety, security, suicide deterrents, aesthetics, and ship traffic obstruction. One of the next steps identified is to determine where the money could come from; whether federal, state or local grants and programs, private funding, or the potential of self-funding some components, like maintenance, through the use of tolls.
