New stop signs have been installed on either side of the Orange Avenue median at Seventh Street. Those traveling east or west on Seventh across Orange will encounter them. The California Department of Transportation installed the signs within the past few days.
The City was not aware that the signs were going to be installed. The City was aware of Caltrans’ concerns with the accident history at that site. Most accidents are low-speed rear-end accidents. The intersection has a vehicle collision rate higher than the state average. As a result, Caltrans evaluated the intersection and considered possible actions including changing yield signs to stop signs, installing a traffic signal or closing the intersection to cross traffic.
The City asked Caltrans for the least disruptive course of action. The City was surprised when the stop signs were installed. This area is a Caltrans right of way and the agency has no obligation to inform the City of any work it conducts. The City will continue to work with Caltrans to better coordinate these types of changes to traffic patterns.
