SAN DIEGO (USA). As Arch passed the start/finish date and his time flashed up on the board, the feeling of helplessness among the other Air Race pilots was tangible. “Fast and free of mistakes. We have been working very hard in deed and this was our reward in Qualifying,” explains a visibly satisfied Arch. Although the current world champion’s rivals will do anything to get within touching distance of the Austrian, Arch remains immune to any pressure: “Of course it is a huge mental challenge. Rather than having once opponent I have fifteen! Especially Bonhomme, Ivanoff and Lamb are extremely fast, and the smallest of mistakes can decide the race. But, to be honest, I don’t worry about that I just do my thing. On top of that, we have been working around the clock.” The win in Qualification means that Hannes Arch has already secured his first championship point of the weekend, leaving the reigning champion on top of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship overall standings with 14 points. The winner of the main race on Sunday will receive 12 championship points. Pictures free of charge only for editorial use.
