Details rise to surface on ditched WWII plane

SOUTH COUNTY — It was late afternoon on May 28, 1945. Hilda Metz had dinner waiting for her Army husband at their cozy home in Coronado. Joseph Metz was late, and that didn’t sit well with Hilda. He’d better have a good reason for being tardy, she thought. Suddenly, there was her husband, standing at the front door, sopping wet and still in uniform. Metz, an Army gunner, had a great excuse: “I was in a plane crash,” he told his wife. Read the entire Union Tribune story here.
