Last weekend, Coronado Police officers observed a vehicle parked in the red zone in the parking lot located at 1st and D Ave. Two male juveniles were standing next to the car and stated that they had accidentally locked the keys inside the car. Officers noticed that the rear window of the car had been shattered, and when they looked in they could see an unserialized assault style rifle with a 100 round drum style magazine attached. Also in plain view on the rear of the seat was an unserialized Glock style pistol. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed an additional stolen handgun. All firearms were loaded with magazines fully seated.
The vehicle also contained cannabis and cannabis products, unsealed baggies, a digital scale and a small amount of cocaine. The juveniles were charged with: possession of an undetectable firearm, carrying a loaded firearm in a vehicle, minor in possession of a firearm, possession of a controlled substance, prohibited person in possession of ammunition, own a firearm without a serial number, and possession of cannabis for sale.
Guns, gun laws, and gun control are currently nationwide topics of discussion after recent horrific mass shootings. Everyone is on high alert. So this morning around 10 am when a CUSD student found part of a bullet near the CHS football field, CPD announced that out of an abundance of caution, they will have increased police presence on campus today. There are no threats, and CPD is working in close collaboration with CUSD. Officers will also be on the Coronado Middle School and Village Elementary School campuses as a precaution.

In a letter to the CUSD community, Superintendent Mueller wrote on the afternoon of June 7:
Good afternoon,
We are writing this email as a follow up to the message sent just before noon today regarding an incident at Coronado High School.
Thankfully, after a thorough investigation, the Coronado Police Department detected no threat to CHS or any of our campuses. Classes at all schools continued uninterrupted throughout the day.
The incident began at approximately 10am this morning when a student found a piece of a single bullet on the CHS campus and turned it in to school administration.
CPD was immediately informed and was on site beginning an investigation within minutes. Police brought in K-9 dogs that detect gunpowder and were used to sweep the grounds of both CHS and CMS. No additional material was detected. Police presence at all school sites continued throughout the day.
While today’s incident turned out to be harmless, it provided an opportunity to evaluate our response protocols. From the alert student who ‘saw something, said something,’ to the immediate response from the Coronado Police and Fire Departments, and the implementation of our communication system, we were able to react in a timely manner.
We will evaluate our response, and as we stated last week, we will continue to collaborate with local agencies to assess and refine safety protocols over the summer as we review School Site Safety Plans and conduct inter-agency tactical training events with CPD and CFD on CUSD campuses, review response protocols, scrutinize site risks, and assess additional steps to further harden our facilities.
CUSD and the CPD will host a joint parent forum prior to the first day of school in August to update our community on school safety plans. Additional information will be provided in early August.
Today demonstrated that safety is a collective effort requiring vigilance from everyone in our community, especially students, and our commitment to always prioritize the physical and emotional safety of those within our CUSD community.
