Military Children and Education: Interstate Compact Meeting February 22, 2012

Leveling the Educational Playing Field for Military Children

The difficulties of moving every two to three years run much deeper than making new friends, adjusting to a new house, community or climate and attending, yet again, another new school. Transfer of school records between states and from other countries can affect proper placement of students. Some students find that they are threatened with not graduating on time because courses they have taken in a different state are not honored in the new state to which they have moved. If a student starts school in the middle of the year, they may miss out on clubs or activities that started at the beginning of the school year.

The Interstate compact is an agreement between 40 different states to help ease the challenges of frequent military moves on the children of those serving our country. Most mililtary children will move between six and nine different school systems between kindergarten and twelfth grade. Our own eighth grade daughter is in her eighth school. Many millitary children will have at least two transitions during high school alone.
