Middle School Athletes Celebrate Winter Sports with Banquet

Islander Sports Foundation recently hosted the Winter Sports Banquet for Middle School Sports (MSP). All teams are recognized and one member of each team is awarded the “Character Counts” award for his/her contributions both on and off the field.

The evening started with delicious food from Spyros Gyros.Banquet coordinator Angel Butcher and her many volunteers did a wonderful job. MSP Athletic Director Kim Quinlan acted as Mistress of Ceremonies, introducing the sports teams and their coaches.

ISF Executive Director Steve Daluz spoke briefly about the upcoming fundraiser GOT GAME, BRING IT!
http://islandersportsfoundation.com/ and then the recognition started with Boys’ Soccer. Daluz was the Coach for the Boys’ A team who went undefeated and won the South Coast League Championship and presented Mitchell McNeill with the Character Counts award. B team recipient is Carson Hollenbeck.

Girls’ Softball was coached by Randall Adair and Jay Kruer. They had a great season and thoroughly enjoyed the brand new facility. The team earned a spot in the championship game and finished second in the league. Their overall record was 9-3. Character Counts awards were presented to Taylor Page and Caroline Massie.

Caroline Massie was described as “special to her teammates.”

Middle School Coed Golf Team with Coaches Hannah Cohen and Randy Coutts

Coed golf coach Randy Coutts said the kids this year were a lot of fun, especially because there was no drama.
The Middle school golf program is such a great feeder program for the high school that other schools around our
league are interested in copying our program. Girls’ Character Counts award was presented by Coach Hanna
Cohen to Carson Kai Ricks who has been playing golf since age five and a half. She was described as always showing up ready to play. Boys Award went to Max Vineyard who, according to his coach, went from “combat boots to slacks and golf shoes”.

Boys Basketball participants

There were seventy-six athletes who tried out for Boys’ basketball. To accommodate as many players as possible, the A, B, and C team each had 15 players. Coached by Kevin Couture, Drew Zeller and JD Laaperi the Character Counts
awards were presented to Jack Balfour, Chad Lee and Miles Manning.

The Lawn Bowling presentation was perhaps the most entertaining of the evening. Coach Bery and the Lawn
Bowling Association presented the Character counts award to Trevor Smith, but not before Coach Bery
enthusiastically informed the crowd that “Lawn Bowling is played by more people on Earth than any other
sport.” Trevor, who is also a baseball player, was lauded as an excellent lawn bowler with potential to have an
international presence in the sport.

Rockin’ Yoga was coached by Mary Farley. Character Counts award recipient is Quinn Beske.

Girls Soccer participants

Girls soccer had forty seven players at tryouts. There was an A and B team and three girls who played
Intramurals with the boys. Everyone had a great season with the A team winning the South Coast League
Championship. There was some playful banter between the league champion boys and the girls, since the boys
were undefeated and the girls had one tie. Six year ISF soccer coach Joao Brantuas pointed out, however, that
the girls’ goalie, Ellie Nixon, only allowed one goal all season and “I believe the boys allowed more”.
Katie Hearther, Carolynn Dromsky and Delaney Davenport were awarded the Character Counts awards for girls
soccer.

The evening concluded with the presentation of the overall Character Counts award for the winter sports
season. Coaches submit a description of why they think their player is deserving, without a name attached, and
the winner is chosen, then the name revealed. The recipient receives a small plaque and their name is placed
on a plaque at the school for all to see. Congratulations to Girls’ B Team soccer goalie Carolynn Dromsky, the
Overall Character Counts award winner.

Spring sports tryouts are going on now and two sports, tennis and track, have been closed to new registration
because there is more interest than we have space. There are still spaces in Fun and Fit and Strength and Speed, both held at the Coronado Fitness Club. For more information please contact MSP Athletic Director Kim Quinlan:
