San Diego Symphony on Track for Record Ticket-Selling Season

Coming next month: ‘Symphony MAYnia’ featuring an array of classical, chamber, pops and family concerts—something for everyone

The San Diego Symphony is on the verge of having the 2013-2014 season be the most successful ticket-selling season ever.

“We are excited about everyone who is joining us for our Symphony MAYnia performances during the last month of this season to help us celebrate a truly historic year,” expressed Steve Baker, Coronado Resident and VP of Marketing for the San Diego Symphony, “What we did by performing at a sold-out concert at Carnegie Hall and our success in touring China was fantastic, but being able to celebrate the final month of season with our fans and supporters here in Coronado and San Diego is exceptionally exciting.”

Presenting more than 110 concerts each season, this year the Symphony is on pace to eclipse $5.5 million in ticket sales for the first time. With a dozen concert dates in May showcasing classical, chamber, pops and the final family festival of the season, San Diego Symphony welcomes the public to Symphony MAYnia featuring Tchaikovsky’ Symphony No. 3, internationally acclaimed violinist Vadim Repin, our very own principal pops conductor and Academy Award-winning Bill Conti, pop singing star Sheena Easton and a salute to Mother Nature herself.

“We attribute the Symphony’s success to our board, musicians and staff and their ability and flexibility to evolve and provide a variety of musical offerings catering to audiences of all ages and interests,” states Edward B. ‘Ward’ Gill, chief executive officer of the San Diego Symphony. “Another key for the Symphony’s growing success is embracing the digital future. Compared to the same time last year, online ticket sales are up more than 15 percent,” added Gill.

An example of recent, innovative programming was the special presentation featuring Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine performance with the San Diego Symphony this past weekend. Mustaine added a new twist to Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries. With marketing and public relations support, this concert was sold out nearly a month in advance credited largely to an aggressive social media campaign. (Of course, it didn’t hurt that Mustaine’s Facebook fans number more the 1.5 million and Twitter followers more than half a million.)

“We are committed to making the San Diego Symphony an integral part of the social and cultural fabric of the region and to be community resource for all of San Diego,” Gill stated. He continued, “We just finished a $3.5 million renovation of the Jacob’s Music Center—home of the San Diego Symphony—including a new color palette in our upper and lower lobbies, new carpet, state-of-the-art bars, LED screens throughout the building and newly remodeled restrooms.”

With so much to discuss regarding this record-breaking season, Gill added, “We must acknowledge San Diego Symphony’s artistic excellence led by music director Jahja Ling and the critical success achieved by the Symphony’s landmark performance at Carnegie Hall in the fall of 2013 immediately followed by the orchestra’s first-ever tour of Beijing, Shanghai and Yantai, China, which was an overwhelming triumph. It truly has been an amazing season.”

Symphony MAYnia is highlighted by a different theme throughout the month. Beginning with Tchaikovsky, followed Rachmaninoff and concluding with virtuoso violinist Vadim Repin, classical music enthusiasts can experience the best of the best all in one month. Lodged between these musical greats is pop singing star Sheena Easton performing the greatest hits of the popular James Bond movies conducted by Bill Conti, Academy Award-winning composer of the hit movie The Right Stuff. Conti also composed the music to Easton’s international hit, For Your Eyes Only from the James Bond movie of the same name. Rounding out this month-long, musical extravaganza is the Symphony’s Family Festival: I Love Mother Nature, a tribute to moms everywhere celebrating the many earthly sounds provided by Mother Nature herself.

For the grand finale weekend of the Jacobs Masterworks, the Symphony will hold an exclusive backstage champagne toast for 2014-2015 subscribers. For more information and concert details, please see the Symphony MAYnia schedule, box office telephone number and website address below.
