“Avengers: Endgame” – Lives Up to the Expectations

The highly anticipated Avengers: Endgame opened Thursday night, April 26th to a sold-out crowd at Coronado’s Village Theatre and broke the global box office record with an estimated $644 million opening. While Avengers fans anxiously awaited the conclusion to last year’s Infinity War’s cliffhanger, they also mourned the end of the Avengers series. The real question is can Marvel pull off another action-packed, humor-filled, interesting storyline that has kept their fans coming back time and again? I would venture to say the answer to that question is a resounding YES!

It is no easy feat to satisfy die-hard fans but it did just that for my two sons. “There were a lot of plot twists, I thought it had a really good storyline that pieced everything together and wrapped up the Avengers series in a great way, but I hate that it’s the last Avengers movie,”  said my older son who loved the movie. My younger son agreed saying, “It was one of my favorites because it featured all the superheroes together and had a lot of action, I love when I see all my favorite superheroes in just one movie and not five different ones.”

In an effort not to spoil the movie for fans, I will give an overview of some of the themes rather than details. Endgame has all the ingredients required for a great superhero movie with its action, drama, humor and unexpected twists, but it is also thoughtful in the way it develops its characters. It did a great job of demonstrating how individuals deal with loss, grief, survivor’s guilt and unwanted change. The movie also navigates team dynamics and the challenges when you have a group of individuals who are all used to leading the fight. No matter which marvel character is your favorite, you will find yourself pulling for them all. If you are like me, you will want to go home and watch some of the earlier Avengers movies to remind you of some of the origin stories that you get small glimpses of here. It is a movie full of exciting highs (at one point the audience broke out cheering) and devastating lows that will have some shed a few tears, but overall it is a satisfying end to a wildly successful series.
