Last week, the Islander Varsity Softball team opened their season with three straight wins. On Monday (2/26), the team hosted Madison High School, resulting in an 18-0 shutout with several highlights. Senior Cassidy Zolla pitched the entire game, recording three strikeouts and gave up one hit. Playing in her first high school game, junior Janessa Hudson got a hit on her first pitch, which resulted in a home run.
The following day, the Islanders hosted Morse High School, and Coach Tony Isabella gave many of the younger players an opportunity to shine. Freshman Marianne Akre pitched seven innings and struck out eleven batters, giving up only four hits. At bat, sophomore Shelby Linde and Hudson each hit homeruns, and the team pulled through with a 10-3 victory.
Concluding their week, Coronado played home against San Ysidro High School. “Although we won 15-4, it was not an easy victory,” comments Coach Isabella. The Islanders were off to a good start in the first inning with eight runs and two more in the third inning. By the fourth inning, San Ysidro started gaining momentum and scored four runs. Stopping their momentum was senior Laiken Warner who hit a three-run homerun, while junior Katelyn Smith pitched her first game to strike out eight runners. The final score resulted in a dominating 15-4 win.
The team currently holds a three-win record.
