Sweet Soles Boutique at 957 Orange Ave is now open.
“Give a girl the right pair of shoes and she can conquer the world.” – Marilyn Monroe
It might have been decades ago that Marilyn Monroe espoused the virtues of great shoes, but this week it’s local blonde bombshell Kari Ursitti who’s stepping up the availability of fashionable footwear (and more) on Coronado’s Orange Avenue.
Sweet Soles, Ursitti’s first-ever retail venture was an idea that came in response to her daughters’ endless need for new shoes:
“Having two daughters, it felt like I was always running to the mall to get shoes. It was all tennis or prom shoes,” Ursitti laughs, “there really wasn’t anywhere in Coronado with a selection of shoes for any occasion at a competitive price.”
Ursitti spent years researching ways to bridge the gap in the Coronado market. She made note of favored boutique stores in Los Angeles, San Clemente, and Laguna Niguel– first considering potential franchise opportunities. Ultimately, however, Kari decided last year that the circumstances were en pointe for opening a store of her own:
“It was as though all the signs were pointing towards this. I was very lucky and found a consultant who helped me navigate the whole process. She introduced me to reps and educated me on buying theories, and really coached me along the way.”
Kari also credits her experience as a consumer for shaping her inventory choices, being mindful of the magic $100 price threshold:
“Our products are comparable to the mid-range brands you would find at major department stores like Nordstrom. Sam Edelman, Steve Madden, Eileen Fisher… they are all reasonably priced brands that are well-made and fashionable.”
In addition to shoes, Sweet Soles stocks handbags, accessories, and select performance wear.
“This first round of inventory was really a best-guess. I’ve tried to consider what people are wearing and what they want, but my plan is to evolve the store based on personal relationships and really getting to know our clients.”
Sweet Soles officially opened for business February 1, but the grand opening celebration will be taking place Friday, February 8th between 5-7pm. While there may or may not be a red-carpet at the event, Coronado’s own well-heeled Mayor Bailey will be making a VIP appearance for the ceremonial ribbon cutting.
