Last Wednesday, the Islander cross country team ran in the Western League Championships to determine the Western League Athlete of the Year and qualifiers for the CIF Finals meet. As a team, the girls placed second behind Scripps Ranch High School, followed by Cathedral Catholic, University City, La Jolla, and Serra High Schools. Senior Teresa Perez defends her league title for the second year in a row with a time of 18:29, as she had previously won Western League as a junior. “When we were in the Eastern League in 2016, she won the Eastern League Girls’ Athlete of the year title,” comments Coach George Green.
The second finisher for the girls was sophomore Sofia Van Arsdale, placing sixth overall with a time of 19:30. Following Van Arsdale were Abigail Hundley (19:53), Madden Hundley (19:55), Regina Czerewko, and Lauren White. With their great performance, all varsity runners will be competing in the CIF Finals meet.
In the boys’ varsity race, Brad Busby finished first for the Islanders, placing second overall with a time of 16:25. Cole Mullins placed eleventh, clocking 16:56, followed by Connor Jaynes, who finished in thirteenth place one second behind Mullins. Subsequent finishers for the Islanders were Casey Harris (17:31), Landon Mullins (17:38), Grant Hawthorne (17:50), Cole Hutcherson (18:28), Gio Navarro, and Will Leonard. All but the latter two will move on to the CIF Finals.
“Perez, Van Arsdale, and Busby, because they finished in the top 10, are All-Western League Runners,” says Coach Green. “Busby was also named the boy’s Senior Western League Runner of The Year.”
Congratulations to Islander Cross Country for an excellent season! We wish them luck, as they continue on to the post-season CIF meet and state meet.
