Coronado residents have bemoaned – mostly on social media – the dearth of Chinese food on the Island. Thanks to a partial remodel of Shima Japanese Steakhouse, the wait will be over soon. Spicy House is planning to open in early August and will offer authentic Chinese cuisine.

Offerings will include traditional Szechuan fare as well as a bevy of other options including noodles, hot pots and other “Americanized” dishes. Adding to its authenticity, server staff as well as the head chef will be Chinese.

“We realized that there was an opportunity to offer a Chinese food here in Coronado,” said Dee Bromley, one of Shima’s owners. “Being Chinese, I began to empathize with residents and was getting frustrated having to drive to Convoy Street two times a week to get authentic Chinese food. With a few renovations, we were able to convert our restaurant and make this exciting addition.”

“The decision to introduce Spicy House to Coronado came quickly,” said Bromley. “We had the idea in early April and made it happen. We are hoping that the community will appreciate what we are offering.”

Spicy House will offer dine-in, take out and delivery service. Additionally, the restaurant will be the first restaurant in Coronado to offer service through Amazon, according to Bromley.
