OLD GOATS OF TRAVIS MANION FOUNDATION HOSTING COMMUNITY EVENT ON JUNE 25 AT LOEWS CORONADO TO SUPPORT WOUNDED WARRIORS

In keeping with its mission, the Old Goats has joined forces with the Travis Manion Foundation to honor recovering wounded warriors by holding a fundraiser on June 25 at the Loews Coronado Bay Resort starting at 12pm. The day’s activities are designed to be enjoyable and will include a BBQ and wheelchair basketball game. The event will pit the Wounded Warriors Wolfpack against the Loews Coronado Good Neighbor Program and will be refereed by Mayor Casey Tanaka and members of the Coronado City Council. The San Diego Wolfpack is the only wheelchair basketball team in the United States that is made up of active duty and veteran service members who have sustained an amputation, spinal cord injury or other orthopedic or neurological disorder.

“Our goal is to provide a fun afternoon for the wounded warriors and their families while, at the same time, raising additional funds on their behalf through individual donations to the Old Goats of Travis Manion,” said Ben Hallowell, a longtime Coronado resident, who is one of the driving forces behind Old Goats along with Sam Ward and Jan Shaw. “This is a great opportunity to bring the community together, have fun and support an important, worthy cause.”

The basketball game continues Old Goats commitment within the Coronado community to show support for veterans. Mayor Tanaka and the City Council will be participating along with members of the Rotary and Optimist Clubs as well as members of Loews.

“Old Goats has been supporting the military community for nearly half a decade,” said Mayor Tanaka. “The basketball game is a great opportunity for the community to get to know and support wounded warriors, and to see how well-adjusted and committed they are to maintain their health through sport. This event will be a fun way for the community at large to be involved with our veterans.”

“This event is emblematic of the great partnership we have with the Coronado community,” said Dean Griffin, Loews Coronado’s Hotel Manager. “Furthermore, it is an honor to support a worthy cause such as Wounded Warriors. This event is exactly the reason Loews Good Neighbor Program was formed.”

about-travis
1st Lt. Travis Manion made the ultimate sacrifice in the Al Anbar province of Iraq. He was fatally wounded by an enemy sniper while aiding and drawing fire away from his wounded comrades. His selfless actions allowed every member of his patrol to survive. For his actions, he was awarded the Silver Star and Bronze Star with Valor.

First Lt. Travis Manion, a U.S. Marine, was killed in Iraq on April 29, 2007. Soon after, Travis’ late mother and sister, themselves members of Old Goats, founded the Travis Manion Foundation to assist our nation’s veterans and families of the fallen. TMF engages with veterans and families of the fallen in all stages of their personal journeys and offers them unique opportunities to empower them to achieve their goals. TMF honors the fallen by challenging the living. TMF challenges veterans and survivors to lead the “If Not Me, Then Who…” movement and inspire others to continue the service to community and country shown by the nation’s fallen heroes.

The Old Goats was formed in 2008 as an informal group of USNA graduates to provide dinner, movie and sports tickets to the wounded warriors in the C5 unit at Balboa Naval Hospital. It has since evolved into actively supporting veterans and their families with events such as a Veterans Day weekend retreat and a Thanksgiving turkey dinner delivery. Additionally, the Old Goats currently work with Peter Harsch Prosthetics and the Warrior Foundation Freedom Station to reach those wounded warriors who are no longer on active duty and are transitioning to civilian life.
