Community Voices: City Council to Decide About Adding More Bike Stripes

This Tuesday, September 15 at 4:00pm, the Coronado City Council will
meet to reconsider the issue of putting bicycle-related striping and
sharrows on all of the residential streets in Coronado, in conjunction
with the City’s annual street preventative maintenance project.

City staff has recommended that the Council vote to install striping
and bicycle markings, as previously approved. And apparently, unless
there is a great outpouring of individuals at the meeting against this
proposal, the Council may very well vote to mark up our beautiful town, all under the guise of safety.

Does this seem like excess to you? If we were living in a large town
like La Jolla where the speed limit was 40-45 MPH in many areas and
cars were whizzing down the roads at high speeds, we might support
limited bicycle lanes on roads with a clear need. However, in a small town like Coronado, with speed limits of 25 MPH on most streets,
putting bicycle lanes on every street is overkill and frankly it is
visual pollution on our calm neighborhood streets.

This is an issue that will impact all Coronadans -- we urge everyone toattend next Tuesday's City Council meeting, and also write your Councilmembers. This seems to be the only thing they will listen to.
