Five Coronado Churches Pack 30,000 Meals for Hungry Children

This morning, on Palm Sunday, St. Paul’s United Methodist Church hosted a meal packaging event in partnership with Children of the Nations. 175 people representing five churches participated: Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Coronado Community Church, Resurrection Lutheran Church, Christ Episcopal Church and St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. The cost of packaging 30,000 meals is $7500 and was paid for by St. Paul’s and Sacred Heart.

As we enter Holy week, we remember that Christ came to this earth not to be served, but to serve others. Jesus tells us to take care of the least of these and today the volunteers did just that as they worked together to feed hungry children in destitute situations in the Dominican Republic. This meal packaging was the perfect way to honor Christ and follow His example.

These five churches have a goal of joining together with additional churches and the Coronado community to package 100,000 meals in Spreckels Park in the Fall of 2014. Because of severe droughts in Malawi and Uganda, there is a serious shortage of food, and Children of the Nations is working to provide more meals than normally needed for the rest of 2014. We have an opportunity to help with this food shortage! If interested in helping with the next meal packaging event, please contact Pastor Lisa Johnson at St. Paul’s 435-5691.

A huge thank you to the many volunteers who made today happen and worked for many hours to make this event a great success!
