Floral Alert: 445 Pomona Wins “Best Home Front in the City”
———–
The 87th Annual Coronado Flower Show, “A Floral Olympiad,” will take place the weekend of April 21 and 22 in Spreckels Park, 600 Orange Avenue.
This year’s flower show celebrates the summer Olympic games in London; floral design categories incorporate the Olympic theme, including the five Olympic rings, the release of the doves and the Olympic flame. Table Designs commemorate the city of London with “High Tea at Harrod’s,” “Cruising on the Thames” and “A Dinner fit for a King.”
Continuing with Olympic fun, this year’s “Miniature and Small Designs” includes among its themes, Women’s Figure Skating, (Kristi Yamaguchi); Golden Boy (Mark Spitz), Miracle On Ice (The 1980 U.S. Men’s Ice Hockey Team Beats the Russians); and The Dream Team (The 1992 U.S. Men’s Basketball team).
Flower Show hours are Saturday, Apr. 21, 1 – 5 p.m. and Sunday, Apr. 22, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. A plant sale on Saturday is open 7:30 a.m. to noon and a beer garden, inside the flower show tent, is open 1 – 5 p.m. on Saturday and noon – 4 p.m. on Sunday.
The Coronado Floral Association members’ gala is Saturday, 6 – 8:30 p.m. inside the Flower Show tent.
Exhibits are placed inside tents surrounding the central bandstand, which becomes the stage for continuous entertainment, announcements and trophy presentations. The Flower Show includes market places and a food pavilion open during the show hours. The awards ceremony is Sunday at 3 p.m. with a rose and cut flowers sale following at 4 p.m.
Admission is $5, adults; children 12 and under and Coronado Floral Association members admitted free.
Flowers and plants to be entered in the show can be delivered beginning at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, April 20.
The Coronado Flower Show, the largest flower show under a tent in the United States, is a Standard Flower Show in compliance with all National Flower Show guidelines. The show includes Wildflowers (cut with permission from the Bureau of Land Management and all labeled by species for the show), youth creations, hilarious “Men’s” creations, tabletop designs, roses and more.
This year “Grow Boxes” were distributed in early March to all children from preschool to fifth grade in Coronado schools; students are encouraged to enter their young plants in the youth horticulture division. The Grow Boxes were manufactured by International Paper Box and were introduced to students by Floral Association board member Deanna Latendresse and the Junior Woman’s Club.
As part of the Flower Show, every single Coronado home front is judged! The map to the winning home fronts can be picked up at the Flower Show for a self-guided tour of Coronado’s floral fineryÂ… a wonderful activity for photographers and painters or anyone looking for design inspiration for their own yards.
Commercial fronts, church grounds, municipal buildings, school grounds, condominiums and apartments fronts are also judged by Flower Show committees.
The 2012 Coronado Flower Show chairs are Laura and Rob Crenshaw. The Coronado Floral Association, the governing body, includes officers Leslie Crawford, president; Laura Crenshaw, vice president; Beth Bakke, second vice president; Ginny Osgood, secretary; Bob Cooley, treasurer and Nancy Helsper, membership.
