As the concert began to wind down and I started to fold up our chairs, cork the wine and get ready for our drive back to the Coronado Shores, my husband said his good-bys to the young Navy captain The captain asked us if he would see us the next week at Concert In the Park. We said “no” because we were going back home to Oklahoma, but we would be back next summer and we would see him then. He said “no” because he would be deployed then.
As we walked across the park to our car parked behind the library, I noticed people still enjoying the music and the park. They were dancing and laughing with their friends and family. Young and old, many of these Coronado residents had served or were serving our country. Thinking about the Navy captain and so many like him, the phrase “freedom isn’t free” came to mind.
Today, walking through Star Park, I saw that phrase engraved on a stone as a memorial. I thought about the troops lost last week, including our Navy Seals and that phrase “freedom isn’t free” took on real meaning. God bless America and all those that keep our country free. Never forget the sacrifices and service given for that freedom.
