SCAM ALERT!!!
BE AWARE OF A YOUNG CAUCASIAN MAN WITH DARK HAIR ABOUT 22 TO 25 YEARS OLD….soliciting charitable donations from residents in return for work to be done. He tells a very convincing story and seals the deal by showing you a donation check from someone in the neighborhood. Tuesday evening December 14th 3 Coronado homeowners (including myself) were duped into into making a charitable contribution.
Here’s how the story goes:…..The scammer appeared at my door about 6 p.m. saying he was a “friend” of my neighbor implanting his legitimacy and credibility. He further confirms it by showing you the donation check written by your neighbor. After telling you the purpose of his solicitation is to raise funds for his college softball team to go to Spain and that his father, a doctor, has already donated one half of the expense, he goes into his sales pitch by showing you a
somewhat worn flip chart of charities to choose from and a list of services he will provide for the donation of your choice beginning at $132.00. My neighbor chose having her windows washed and I chose having my car detailed. He has you make your check out payable to MFA and as he departs he tells you his mother who lives on Buccaneer Street will be calling you to set up an appointment for the work to be done.
Shortly after I tendered my donation check I got a call from another concerned neighbor who said he had donated after having been shown the check I wrote and wondered if I knew the man and I said no but he said he knew my neighbor
and showed me her check. When I checked back with her she said she had second thoughts and after making inquiries found the mother’s phone number was not in service, his name was not in the Coronado directory and no info on the web. It became apparent we had become victims of the scammer. Fortunately we were able to stop payment on our checks. This guy is a smooth operator and this ain’t his first Rodeo. If he shows up at your door CALL THE POLICE.
Also, get as much information as you can to provide the police with helping them catch him. STAY ALERT!!!
