The Coronado High School Sailing Team is a member of the Pacific Coast Interscholastic Sailing Association, one of seven regional districts in the Interscholastic Sailing Association (ISSA) comprising 500 active high school teams nationwide, however only 20 teams compete at the annual High School US Sailing Nationals. After eight months of qualifying competitions, on Sunday, April 23rd at the Pacific Coast Championship (PCC) Regatta at Cabrillo Beach, the Islanders became one of four Pacific teams to qualify for US Nationals to be held at MIT University in Boston, May 12-14. This now gives them a shot at becoming US High School National Champions.
Leading up to the event the team has been lucky enough to have returning alumni and previous coaches come out to scrimmage and advise, as well as Cathedral Catholic High School led by champion sailor Doug Hart. The last time the team won US Nationals was in 2001, under head-coach Willem van Waay and assistant coach Kate Sheahan. “Our eight-month season goal has not only come to fruition under the athletes who competed this past weekend at the PCCs, but included the entire effort of all of our 24 sailors. This is a once a lifetime possibly opportunity for these young athletes, and the team should be proud of the sustained effort and hard work on and off the water over this long season. Southern California teams are notorious for competing well at Nationals (SoCal teams have won six out of the last ten nationals), so our next goal is to win and bring another title home to Coronado.” Expenses for the event include cross-country airfare, hotels, boat charters, registration fees, meals and coaching for these Coronado sailors.
