Coronado High School is now open and the lockdown has been lifted. Officers have deemed the campus safe. However, Police are still on scene and will continue to investigate the origins of threat.
CHS Principal Jennifer Moore sent this email toĀ students’ families at 11:07am:
Coronado High School was the subject of a specific social media threat and was placed into lockdown as a safety precaution at approximately 10:30 AM and lifted approximately twenty minutes later.Ā District and school staff members worked closely with law enforcement to investigate the credibility of the threat and to ensure the safety of everyone on campus. We can confirm that there is no imminent danger at CHS.Ā Our students were sheltered safely in classrooms throughout campus during the lockdown and staff members appropriately and immediately performed their duty of care of our students.Ā Counselors and administrators will be available to address student concerns.Ā We are grateful to our school community and the Coronado Police Department for their collaboration in protecting the safety of our students, and to our students for practicing “see something, say something” when they perceive danger or threats to our students or school community.Ā
We will continue to review our safety protocols and emergency response in the best interests of student health and safety.
At 11:14am, Coronado Police Department stated to The Coronado Times:
“There were no weapons found on campus.”
At 12:12pm, CUSD and CPD issued this joint statement:
The Coronado Unified School District and the Coronado Police Department are releasing this joint community message related to todayās lockdown at Coronado High School.
Ā
This morning the School District was notified of a threat of violence against the Coronado High School campus. The threat was posted on social media and brought to the attention of the high school administration by concerned students.
Ā
Our school district takes every threat of violence extremely seriously and we immediately contacted law enforcement. In addition, the entire CHS campus was placed on lockdown status while awaiting information from the Coronado Police Department. The police department responded quickly in coordination with school staff.
Ā
After conducting a search of CHS, the source of the threat was detained off campus by the Coronado Police Department. When the CPD confirmed that the campus community was no longer in imminent danger the lockdown was lifted and school activities resumed.
Ā
We want to remind our students and families that threats are a serious matter. Threats are considered a felony, a crime punishable by imprisonment. In addition to criminal punishment, students who make threats are subjected to district disciplinary consequences.
Ā
Because our priority is for the safety and well-being of our students, their families, and school staff, school district and the police department will continue to collaborate to refine school safety protocols and procedures.
Ā
Every Coronado Unified school has established a safety plan and lockdown procedures that contribute to maintaining a safe learning environment for our students. In the wake of this incident, school personnel will be reviewing those plans and continuing their ongoing relationship with law enforcement to ensure everything is done to maintain the safety and security of our schools.

This morning at 10:19 a.m. we received a call from a staff member at Coronado High School reporting that they had just been made aware of a specific threat to the school and as a precaution they placed the campus on lockdown. Officers arrived on scene and with the help of school staff it was determined that the student who made the threat was not on campus today. The lockdown was lifted 30 minutes later. No weapons were found at the school.
The 16-year old male student was taken into custody without incident at his home in Coronado. He was booked into Juvenile Hall and charged with Criminal Threats.
We would like to thank those students who came forward with the original information. This is a great example of āsee something, say something.ā
