Coronado High School Junior ROTC: Islander Company

Coronado High School’s Navy Junior ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps), commonly referred to as “Islander Company” by cadets, students and staff of the high school, was started in September of 2003. It is a class offered at the high school to teach the cadets self-discipline and leadership skills. What is learned in the class is broken up by the years you have been in ROTC.

First years (NS1s) learn about military customs and how to wear the uniform, as well as ninth grade health curriculum taught by First Sergeant Martin Gallegos (USMC Retired). Second and third years (NS2s and 3s) learn the Naval Science curriculum taught by Captain Ken Ireland (USN Retired) and fourth years (NS4s) learn about the 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership taught through video instruction. All cadets also learn unarmed and armed basic drill and have physical training 1-2 times a week.

After school cadets are welcome to join teams such as armed and unarmed exhibition, armed and unarmed basic, color guard, PT and academic team all of which compete at drill meets in order to qualify for Super Bowl, the last drill meet of the year where schools that have placed in the top three at “qualifiers” compete to be known as the best of San Diego’s ROTCs.
