The 24th annual Coronado Schools Foundation fundraiser will take place at the Coronado High School (CHS) quad and Performing Arts Center on Thursday, March 15th from 5-9 p.m. The Connect-a-Thon, a reinvented form of the telethon, aims to connect Coronado public schools and the community as a whole by raising funds to benefit schools in the 2012-2013 school year.
This fun-filled fundraiser will kick off with a special act featuring Mayor Casey Tanaka, also a CHS history teacher and alumnus, highlighting his connections throughout our greater community. Each hour of the show, hosted by principals, vice principals, and Class of 2012 senior hosts, will highlight a different school site –Village Elementary at 5PM, Silver Strand at 6PM, CMS at 7PM and CHS at 8PM. “All members of our community are invited to come on down to CHS to support our faculty and students,” said CSF Board Member/Student Representative Nick Andrews, CHS Class of 2012. “We want to share our success with our community and encourage others to contribute in support of public education. Whether you have someone in school or not, we all benefit from strong schools.” Nick will join his fellow senior hosts: Katie Centeno, Will Funk, Lila Gavares, Moriah Grant, Luke Hoffmann, Luke McCue, Eitan Peled and Reis Stanley.

The opening act is rumored to be based on the popular Youtube video below, titled “Where the Heck is Matt?”
For the first time ever, this event will be completely student-produced, showcasing student talent both in front of and behind the cameras. In addition to taped and live acts from each school site throughout the district, the Digital Media departments at both Coronado Middle School (CMS) and CHS will produce the event. “Not only do our students get to extend their theoretical knowledge through project based learning, but they will help raise money for their schools in the process,” commented Angela Hall Tieman, CHS/CoSA Digital Media-Filmmaking Instructor. “This is a great opportunity for CHS students and we are thrilled to contribute our time and talents in support of this event.” Kathleen Wakefield, the Director of Development for the Coronado Schools Foundation (CSF) and a resident of Coronado since 2001 said, “Being a part of a live television production run by students is very exciting and I am constantly amazed at how capable kids are. Every time we have thrown out a challenge – they have more than met it – from designing the event logo to producing video promos for the show.”
The Coronado Middle School KCMS News Team (above) and the Coronado High School Digital Media class (below) will work together to produce the Connect-a-Thon for the first time ever.
Meanwhile, the fun will continue out in the CHS Quad from 5 – 7:30 pm. Roving Reporter Fred Eckert returns with a senior host to highlight Coronado alumni, local community and business leaders, parent teacher organizations, school administrators and students as they take part in the many games and activities available for all ages (game tickets sold on site). Games and activities will include a dunk tank, a cupcake walk, board breaking by Producing Partner Martial Arts America and a robotics demonstration by CHS Crown City Robotics Club. Dining options include the CSF Food Court (Village Pizzeria pizza and Mootime Creamery ice cream) and the ever popular CHS Senior Class BBQ (hot dog and hamburger meals and a tempting array of baked goods), raising money for end-of-year activities. Those who purchase $20 or more in Quad event tickets (or make a donation of that amount or more) will receive a Locals Card, with discounts at many local businesses who support our public schools.

CSF aims to match its $628,000 in support to public schools for 2012-13 school year and needs YOUR support to again reach that record return. Relatives and deployed loved ones can watch the telethon live via Internet streaming through the CSF website, locally on Channel 19, and throughout San Diego County on ITV Cable 16. All donations of $250 or more will be eligible to win a Plus One Nano 6’2″ short board, generously donated by Emerald City (Orange Ave), locally owned by Kelly and Larry Kraus. EVERY donation is appreciated and donor names will be announced during the Connect-A-Thon.
